MODE ECO MOOD HOTEL - AN EXAMPLE OF HOSPITALITY DESIGNED ACCORDING TO SUSTAINABLE PRINCIPLES.

From this premise, the MODE project emerged in Rimini, engaging 14 of the most prominent architecture firms in the hospitality sector. They were tasked with providing their unique interpretations of sustainable design.

The MODE project materializes as a hospitality space set to become a benchmark in the industry, achieved through the revitalization of Rimini's historical tourist structures.

While Rimini is predominantly known as a sun & beach destination, it has also established itself in the market for leisure sea and inland tourism, as well as for business, events, and internationally acclaimed festivals. Rimini is an iconic destination and city that is continuously evolving.

MODE HOTEL is the redevelopment of the Hotel Arlesiana in Rimini, situated in the San Giuliano Mare area near the port, strategically located in the heart of Rimini and in close proximity to business and leisure hubs. It's a hotel with a strong green focus, aiming for sustainability not only in design and management but also in its social and economical impact. This is achieved through the integration of renewable energy sources, adherence to green building principles resulting in a zero-impact structure, water reuse systems, and the adoption of energy-efficient appliances.

The structure of MODE HOTEL serves as a permanent showroom where each room offers a distinctive experience, reflecting the individual designer's vision of eco-conscious hospitality. MODE HOTEL defies traditional hotel paradigms, embracing the vision of doing things differently.

The distributive layout of the MODE project includes nine suites, a co-working area, a lobby, and ground floor services. Each space exudes its own identity while reflecting the design values of the theme.

The hotel’s exteriors are designed by Rizoma Architecture, focusing on creating a building envelope that is energy-efficient, while harnessing renewable energy sources, offering protection against the elements. "Today, we’re tackling a significant challenge: implementing concrete and robust sustainability principles in construction means blending smart solutions, cost control, and early assessment of the benefits of our choices." The exterior is also environmentally friendly, with the choice of facade coatings that absorb pollution, a material choice extended to the south wall, destined to host a work by a street artist.

The ground floor entrance and common areas are designed by Laura Verdi in the project "Get cozy in a second life (originally: Stai cosy in una second life)." "It's a playful fusion of Italian and English meaning: settling into a second life, and seizing the opportunity of not wasting current resources." This sustainability project not only emphasizes material recycling and reuse but also extends to personal well-being, elevating  the bond between humanity and nature through organic shapes reminiscent of circles and the incorporation green elements like plants indoors, alongside graphic representations echoing nature's imagery.

The concept draws inspiration from two distinct yet captivating realms—the vibrancy of the Earth goddess and the enchanting, timeless ambiance of "Alice in Wonderland". "The goal is to find balance between these two seemingly distant worlds. Our representation of the pristine environment departs from the use of traditional green tones, instead embracing a more organic and fluid palette, with particular attention to the primary source of life: water."

The common spaces within hotel evolve into sustainable co-working environments, where the perfection of the golden section and natural balance guide every aspect of the design, fostering an inviting and collaborative atmosphere conducive to creativity.

MODE Hotel hosts nine distinct suite types, each designed by nine architecture firms, tailored with specific themes, but united by a common thread of sustainable design ethos.

On the ground floor, the Garden Suite, designed by Roberta Studio, welcomes guests with a design solution rooted in biophilic principles. It features both indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing guests to reconnect with nature, from the colors to the chosen materials, to the presence of greenery within the room. "As designers and architects, it's essential we propose solutions that harmonize with the landscape, materials, and find innovations that blend design, sustainability, and nature."

On the first floor, we find the Estate Italiana suite designed by Paola Navone and Gianpaolo Venier for OTTO Studio under the artistic direction of Cristina Pettenuzzo. Also gracing this level are the From Rimini to Havana suite, a design by the Interior Design Degree Course workshop of the Politecnico di Milano, alongside the Onirica suite, curated by Eclettico Design-Lombardini 22.

The Estate Italiana suite narrates the carefree spirit of summer holidays on the Riviera, offering a contemporary ode to Rimini's unique hospitality. With clear nods to postcards sent from vacations, the design reflects a sense of nostalgia in the bed's headboard. "In this project, our focus is to put the human experience at the forefront, emphasizing on social sustainability. It’s about respecting production processes, craftsmanship, and the time artisans dedicate - the quality of life of those who produce the objects we use."

The From Rimini to Havana suite reimagines the concept of "second life," rejuvenating existing materials through a series of treatments and finishes belonging to the Made in Italy. "For us, the connection with the territory is fundamental. We prioritize local sourcing, value the local artisans, items in the local markets, products derived from ethical material practices."

Lastly, the Onirica suite draw inspiration from the dreamlike circus imagery often associated with Rimini's cultural icon, Fellini. This visionary design choices and material palette are grounded in awareness and attention to sustainability, interpreted in its broadest sense. "Within the project, we've studied every detail to minimize environmental impact without compromising the elegance and functionality of the spaces." The core norms of hospitality and that of luxury converge in an unconventional interpretation.  

The second floor is home to three distinctive suites: the Greenside suite, designed by Paolo Scoglio of The Nest; the Silenzio Sfrenato suite by the NOA studio; and the Sensi suite by ovre.design®.

The Greenside suite adopts a bio-inspired approach, where nature serves as a guide for innovative and sustainable design strategies. "We utilize computational design tools to write parametric design codes - a sort of recipe that brings together various elements to design everything from micro-architectures for natural hospitality to hotel rooms." Silenzio Sfrenato embodies a sustainable hospitality narrative, focusing on discreet luxury.

Through the designing process, NOA interprets the idea of environmental respect at the core of MODE: working with the solely essentials, eliminating what we deem superfluous in a hotel room to avoid visual 'noise' and maintain the essence of design. The furniture at the guests’ disposal are of high quality, artisanal and durable over time. And to ensure the stay becomes a unique experience, NOA furnishes the room with a few but designer elements, showcasing the exclusivity of the design. "Playing on the adjective 'unbridled', often combined with 'luxury' in a baroque and exaggerated sense of the term, we reverse the meaning in this room, while still delivering on the promise of high quality and staging a sophisticated design for those staying in the room."

The Sensi suite isn't just a destination—it's a journey, an exploration of a holistic space that leaves guests feeling more sustainable and longing to return. ovre.design® has envisioned a suite that champions environmental sustainability through a design mindful of eco-friendly principles and processes, all while placing human sustainability at the forefront of the concept, as crucial as its ecological counterpart. "As guests step into the room, they disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with themselves and their five senses. In this intimate bond with the environment, they rediscover the importance of connecting with nature and engaging with materials that are all recyclable and recycled."

The third floor unveils the Mare 3.0 suites by GLA Genius Loci Architettura and the Mini’mor suite by Alessia Galimberti Studio.

The Mare 3.0 concept emerges from the desire to physically and materially transpose a forward-looking sea, turning disadvantage into virtue, where architecture catalyzes new noble processes. "The theme is tied to the sea rejecting certain materials, both organic and inorganic. Through circular economy and reuse, these materials can be reinterpreted and reintroduced into the design industry." The aesthetic outcome will be an environment with neutral tones reminiscent of sand and rocks, punctuated by accents of azure and blue.

An enlightened project, "to give objects a second life through upcycling logic," underlies the Mini’mor concept suite. It involves using recycled materials combined with natural elements that enrich the room with unique scents, promoting well-being within the space. Elements like cedar tables and a significant yet unobtrusive fragrance provide comfort and tranquility. It’s a project that leaves room for the guest, allowing them to feel at home without needing to adapt to the space.

The stay in the real spaces of the new hotel "MODE" will be complemented by that of the first virtual suite created in Italy: SUIT*E, conceived and designed by Emanuele Svetti of Studio Svetti Architecture. Guests, comfortably nestled on the bed, will wear a visor that, in the virtual dimension, will make the bed itself float during a brief yet intense virtual journey, surrounded by a transparent bubble. Through scene changes, guests will be transported from the Suit*E to sail through the sky or plunge into the depths of the sea. "To those who ask me if the intangible could become the future of hospitality, I respond that I am certain that a relatively intangible good like time will be considered the true and unique luxury for the traveler of the future, so the primary goal of those involved in hospitality will be to 'celebrate' it to the fullest."

MODE HOTEL creates a concept, an example of rethinking the model of Emilia-Romagna region guesthouse and joining in a process of city redevelopment, framing it within the modern concept of responsible hospitality tourism. Freshness and passion in sharing a hospitality approach: the structure towards people, people towards the world. Living not as a local but among locals. A place open to all where one can live as they please, according to their own rhythm.
